FIBER MILLS THAT PROCESS BABYDOLL WOOL!
As many of you know, Michelle Schubert, our secretary, has
been
processing and working with 100% Babydoll fiber since she first
acquired her flock of Babydolls. This page is a result of her goal to
provide our members with a list of fiber mills able
to process Babydoll WITHOUT adding any other fiber to it. Types of
mills are a woolen mill, typically they can process fiber from 1 to
3"; a worsted mill, typically they can process fiber from 3 to 6";
and a semi-worsted mill, typicall they can process fiber from 2 to 12".
Processes are limited based on the abilities of their
equipment. Check back to
see if a mill near you has been added.
Michelle contacted fiber mills across the country and asked
them the following
questions:
Do you accept Babydoll for processing?
Have you processed Babydoll in the past?
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length?
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of fiber?
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer
to do both at the mill?
Can you make Babydoll roving?
Can you make Babydoll batts?
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or
woolen? What weights?
Can you felt Babydoll?
Can you dye Babydoll?
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll?
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for?
What is the current expected turnaround time?
If there is any other information you feel would be helpful
to folks new to submitting fiber to your mill that I can pass on,
please let me know.
Below you'll find the name of the mill which is a clickable link to
their website, and their replies to the questions. Please visit their
sites for additional information and contact them with any questions
you may have before sending them your fiber.
Disclaimer: We have not personally used the mills and cannot comment on
the quality, or lack thereof, of their work. Feel free to

us if
you have, or do use them, and let us know what you thought. Photos
of finished product is welcome too.

accepting Babydoll based on their replies.
CONNECTICUT
Twist
of Fate Fiber Mill
Yes I do process Babydoll
Southdown. I have a fair amount of experience in working with
their wool. The minimum staple length for roving is
1” and for yarn the minimum length is 2”.
My minimum run is 2 pounds and my prices are based on the
incoming weight. I don’t skirt and encourage clients to skirt
heavy. Because price is based on incoming weight the more clients do
the better the return, wash if you want but not required. I can do
roving batts or yarn. I find Babydoll doesn’t felt well so do
not provide that option. Our yarns are semi-worsted and can be spun in
weights from sport through bulky. I also offer core spun and find
Babydoll to be one of the better wools for this option. I
offer no dyeing and the current turnaround time is 12 months.
Six Paca Farm
Six Paca can process 100% Babydoll. We have done it in past
years.
Minimum is 2 1/2” and a 3 lb minimum for a batch.
Customers are expected to skirt their own fiber. We do not offer that
process and we do not do dyeing for customers. We accept fiber that is
dyed as long as it’s set and not bleeding dye. We process
yarn from anywhere from sport to bulky, two or three ply, roving but
not batts even though we have a batt attachment.
Turn around time is approximately 4 months.
If you go to the web site SixPaca.com and click on mill
there are instructions and prices plus forms to download and put with
each order.
Thank you for putting this together.
GEORGIA
Spirit
Fiber Works
We only accept Babydoll fiber for fiber pellets used in
organic gardening. We would need a 1 pound minimum and the fiber should
be unskirted, unwashed and staple length does not matter.
ILLINOIS
Round
Barn Fiber Mill
As you will see, we can make some products with Babydoll.
However, our
mill is a semi-worsted mill, and in our opinion, Babydoll is better
suited for a woolen mill. So I would recommend you look
particularly into woolen mills.
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? yes,
for certain products
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? yes
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length? for carded products, 2". For yarn,
stretched staple of 3.5"
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of fiber? 2 lbs. minimum, 350 lbs. maximum at
the moment
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to do both at
the mill? We accept
skirted/washed at the moment, but prefer to do both at the mill.
Can you make Babydoll roving?Yes
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or
woolen? What weights? We
prefer not to make Babydoll yarn, as it is usually too short and lofty
for our semi-worsted machinery
Can you felt Babydoll? Usually
Can you dye Babydoll? Yes
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? Yes
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be used for? No
What is the current expected turnaround time? This
changes weekly, but at the moment about 8 months.
IOWA
Twisted
Sunset Sisters Fiber Mill
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? Yes, but we have not yet had the
opportunity to spin this breed yet so we'd prefer a smaller order to
start with to trial first to ensure folks would be happy with the end
results.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? No we have not yet had that
opportunity, but are always up for a good challenge!
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length? Typically our Belfast equipment
works best with fiber lengths that are greater than 2 to 2.5 inches.
Less then this and the fiber will "slip" as it spins resulting is
slubby sections (unspun) or thick/thin yarn.
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of fiber? We prefer for wool at least 3
lbs for wool due to lanolin loss, but have spun smaller and larger
batches in the past. No minimum.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill? We require
skirting prior to arrival, but washing is optional. We charge a wash
fee of $5/lb incoming weight for wool as we need hotter water, more
water and more soap to strip out the lanolin. The product charges (for
yarn, roving etc) will all be post wash weight. We'd communicate with
you if we needed to rewash any fiber as we can't send any lanolin
through our equipment.
Can you make Babydoll roving? Yes we can make roving. This
works best if the fiber is on the shorter side (closer to 2").
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes, we can make batts. This
works best if the fiber is longer than 2-3".
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or woolen? What
weights? Yes, we can
make yarn. Ours will be a semi-worsted, or semi-woolen yarn depending
on how you look at it. We use a carder (producing woolen) but then send
the fiber through a draw frame which better aligns the fiber after
carding. It's not quite combed fiber though for true worsted (there's
also no combing equipment sold in the US any more :( ).
Can you felt Babydoll? We
do not have a felting machine.
Can you dye Babydoll? We
can dye (acid dye) both raw fiber, or yarn.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? We can make rug yarn, but we
currently do not offer weaving services.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? We can use
skirted wastes to make wool pellets. These are a garden amendment which
can help with moisture retention, aeration and fertilization. It's a
fantastic use for gross fiber :) /span>
What is the current expected turnaround time? We are currently booking about
6-7 months out, and our turnaround time is variable depending on
products selected and size of your order. We operate on a first in /
first out wait list.
KANSAS
Tallgrass
Woolery
I don't believe we have processed any Babydoll Southdown
fleeces
yet. We can basically take a fleece and make it into roving or a cloud.
We prefer to do our own washing. We do not have a minimum poundage,
although I guess at least 1-2 pounds would be preferred. We do not dye
or make yarn. If any of your members have a Babydoll fleece (preferably
2 pounds) for sale, I would be interested in purchasing that to see how
it processes. Our turnaround time of course depends on the amount of
fleeces we have to process. A good estimate is 8-12 weeks. The biggest
advice I would have for fleece submission is to read our "how to
prepare your fleece" on our website. Also to remind everyone that
processing does not remove VM, so garbage in, garbage out. We actually
refuse some fleeces as we don't want to damage our machinery. Hope this
gives you a good overview of our mill.
MAINE
Moorit
Hill Farm and Fiber
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? We do accept Babydoll, but
generally can't spin it into yarn.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? We have processed it in the past.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length? Our minimum staple length is
2.5".
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of fiber? Our minimum is 3 lbs. We will
process less, but charge for 3 lbs. There is no maximum.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill? Fiber must be
well skirted before coming to the mill, but should be unwashed.
Can you make Babydoll roving? We
can make Babydoll roving.
Can you make Babydoll batts? We
can make Babydoll batts.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or woolen? What
weights? We typically
can't make Babydoll yarn.
Can you felt Babydoll? We
don't do any felting.
Can you dye Babydoll? We
don't do any dying.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? We can make rug yarn with
Babydoll.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? We don't
offer any other
services.
What is the current expected turnaround time? Typical turnaround time is 4-6
months.
UnderHillFibers
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? Yes.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? Yes.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple
length? Stretched
fiber length is the only measurement that counts as the fiber goes
through the equipment under tension. This is especially true for
spinning yarns. Less important for just carding. 2-6" is the spinnable
stretched fiber length. Shorter fibers fall out of the carder and are
lost. Longer fibers get caught in the spinners drafting roolers and
causes slubs and breaks.
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of
fiber? Min.
charge weight, but will card or spin less then then that, but the
charge will be for the minimum. 1# for roving and 4# for yarn.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill? Yes.
Can you make Babydoll roving? Yes.
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or woolen? What
weights? Yes, I
can spin yarn. 400-1700ypp semi woolen.
Can you felt Babydoll? I
do not offer felting.
Can you dye Babydoll? I
do not offer dying.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? Did not answer.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? Wash
and pick only, or carded into cloud.
What is the current expected turnaround time? 1 year for yarn. 2 months for
roving.
If there is any other information you feel would be helpful
to folks new to submitting fiber to your mill that I can pass on,
please let me know. Babydoll
has a high grease
weight. I have had fleeces lose 60% just in the wash. I do charge extra
washing fees to cover the large amount of soap needed to clean the
fiber. Yarn spun often has a homespun or inconsistent texture
to it. This is caused by the fibers high boing factor. As the
fiber is released from tension during drafting and spinning, it
boings/bounces back causing small slubs and lumps. The amount of boing
varies from sheep to sheep.
MICHIGAN
Hoof
to Hanger
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? Yes.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? Yes.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple
length? For spinning,
around 3 - 3.5 inches. For
roving, an inch or so.
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of
fiber? 40-ish
pounds.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill? Either way. When
fiber comes in washed it
cuts down the processing time to a few weeks rather than a few
months. (We are very thorough fiber cleaners, taking a time
to adequately clean fiber.).
Can you make Babydoll roving? Yes.
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or woolen? What
weights? Yes, all
weights.
Can you felt Babydoll? No.
Can you dye Babydoll? No

to achieve a specific color desired by clients.)
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? Yes.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? Unaware.
What is the current expected turnaround time? Negotiable ~ weeks or months
depending on customer's needs.
Windy Acres Fiber Mill, LLC
We are currently not accepting fiber in our fiber processing mill due to a very lengthy turnaround time.
If we were, we would be able to make roving and batts from 100% Babydoll.
Another item we can make with 100% babydoll is wool pellets. If
you are not familiar with those they are made from 100% wool and are a
good soil amendment/fertilizer for gardens and house plants. We are accepting new orders for wool pelletizing.

OHIO
America's
Natural Fiberworks
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? We accept Babydoll with limited
processing available.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? We have processed Babydoll in
the past.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length? Our minimum non stretched staple
length for all fibers is 3".
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of fiber? Our minimum amount for a run is
5 pounds incoming weight.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill?
We
accept and encourage skirted fleeces as we do not skirt. We accept pre
washed fiber, but do not require it. All pre washed fiber will be re
washed before we begin our processing to ensure our level of
cleanliness. We charge based on incoming weight, so the more a breeder
can remove lanolin the better their price per finished skein will be.
Can you make Babydoll roving? We will make Babydoll roving.
Can you make Babydoll batts? We can make Babydoll batts but reserve the
right to add Merino if it will not collect on the batt
drum.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so, worsted or woolen? What
weights? We do not take Babydoll to the spinning stage.
Can you felt Babydoll? We
do not felt Babydoll.
Can you dye Babydoll? We
use Dharma and Jaquard Acid dyes.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? We can make rug yarn from

What is the current expected turnaround time? Our current turnaround time
frame
is 10-12 months from receipt of fiber.
Prospect Specialty Fiber Mill LLC
Do you accept Babydoll for processing? Yes we can process Babydoll, BUT
it is a case by case basis as many fleeces are too short or too brittle
to make a decent end product. We do a thorough snap test on every
fleece that comes in, and to make yarn they must be 3-8" in staple
length, which Babydoll often is not.
Have you processed Babydoll in the past? Yes we have processed Babydoll
and I am working on a few as we speak.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched, staple length? Our minimum non stretched staple
length for yarn is 3-8".
Do you have a minimum/maximum amount for intake of
fiber? Our
minimum charge is 5 pounds (if you bring a 3 lb fleece and want it by
itself, you will be charged 5 pounds) and our maximum is 100 pounds
raw. We focus on small farms and flocks like us to shorten turnaround
time.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces; or, prefer to
do both at
the mill? Fleeces
must be skirted, and washed does save them on incoming weight which is
what all charges are based on, however, depending on how good of a job
they do, we may have to rewash. Because Babydolls are so low to the
ground, and often stand below hay feeders, too much vegetation is often
an issue and reason for rejection.
Can you make Babydoll roving? Yes we can make Babydoll roving.
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes we can make Babydoll batts.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? Yes we can make Babydoll yarn
with the criteria stated above. We are a semi worsted mill. We can spin
fingering to chunky.
Can you felt Babydoll? We
can felt.
Can you dye Babydoll? We
do not dye on site but you
are welcome to send dyed wool as long as it didn't get overcooked and
become brittle.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? We do not make core spun at this
time but hope to next year.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? Fleeces
that are rejected (or deemed too dirty, too short, too weak, or client
choice) can be pelletized into fertilizer.
What is the current expected turnaround time? We can fit roving and pellets in
within 3 months but we are booked out until September 2026 on yarn.

the
picture.

SOUTH CAROLINA
J&E
Homestead, LLC
Do you accept Babydoll for processing?
Yes.
Have you processed Babydoll in the
past? I believe so, but some producers don't tell us
what kind of wool they are sending us, even when we ask.
Do you have an minimum, non-stretched,
staple length? We prefer at least 2.5 inches of
stretched staple, anything smaller is thrown out by our equipment.
Do you have a minimum/maximum
amount for intake of fiber? Our minimum is one pound per
fleece. If a customer has more than 50 pounds, we like to
break up the order and get them on "rotation" so that they can get into
the mill on a consistent basis. We determine that need when
they get onto our waiting list.
Do you accept customer skirted/washed fleeces;
or, prefer to do both at the mill? We prefer that the
customers skirt
their own fleeces. We charge incoming weight so they more
debris they remove the less their processing will cost. We do
not want customers to attempt to wash the wool themselves. It
makes it much harder for us to get it thoroughly cleaned here in the
mill if the water temperature is not high enough.
Can you make Babydoll roving? Yes, we make
roving.
Can you make Babydoll batts? Yes, we make
batts.
Can you make Babydoll yarn? If so,
worsted or woolen? What weights? Yes, we
are a worsted
mill. We will make fingering (10-30 wpi) to Chunky (6-9 wpi)
yarns and everything between.
Can you felt Babydoll? Yes, we have a wet
felter and a
needle felting machine.
Can you dye Babydoll? Yes,
we can dye in small (6-8 oz)
batches.
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? Yes,
we can make core-spun yarn
for rugs.
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can
be used for? Not at this time.
What is the current expected turnaround time? 3
years unless the producer just
wants roving, rug yarn, felted items, or batts, then 1 year or less.

VERMONT
Kingdom Fleece & Fiberworks
The most important thing is the staple length. The stapling as
is without tugging on it has to be at least 3 in. long and Babydoll is
very short. I can turn it into roving no problem. I cannot pin draft it
because again it's too short it would be right off the carder. I can
make it into batts. As for washing, I prefer to do the washing myself;
however, I will take it as long as the owner knows that I have the
right to rewash it because it must not have any lanolin whatsoever in
it. Before shipping any Babydoll I would suggest sending a sample to me
in that way I can tell if it's long enough. I've had a few customers
tell me it's 3 in. long and when I get it in the mail it's only an inch
and a half.

are no longer spinning drafted yarns...but we are twisting a Lopi style
yarn. Babydoll fibers would not work.
Can you felt Babydoll? No.
Can you dye Babydoll? Yes
- for rugs!
Can you make rug yarn with Babydoll? Absolutely YES!!
Are there any other services you offer that Babydoll can be
used for? Oh boy!! Yes!
We weave rugs! We
have a massive 1100lb steel rug
loom that cranks out rugs. We have a continuous warp,
allowing us to quickly change sizes. We can weave 48" to 18" wide rugs;
by any length. Popular sizes; 4'x6',
4'x8', 3'x5',
2½x3½, & 2'x3'
We can dye customers fibers any colors, and create unique
colors & colorways. Babydoll fibers make stunning
rugs! They look like
suede when woven. Stunning.
What is the current expected turnaround time? It depends on the order
size. We typically weave most orders 4 weeks. We are
currently scheduling January & February 2026 for rug weaving.
If there is any other information you feel would be helpful
to folks new to submitting fiber to your mill that I can pass on,
please let me know.We
love Babydoll, but we have a unique perspective! We are
actively gearing up additional looms to weave scarves,
shawls, and throws from spun yarns. So if your
producers want finished products - keep us in mind.

Head Spring Fiber Mill
Yes we do process Babydoll.
What we can make, depends upon the
individual fleeces.
We can almost always make core spun rug yarn, and recommend
that use for Babydoll. We sell peg looms and show people how to make
rugs.
Yes we dye.
We can usually make roving or batts.
If we can get spun yarn made, it will probably be more
artsy, inconsistent yarn.
Our experience has been that Babydoll gets pilly passing
thru the machines.
We have no minimum amount.
We do not have felting machines.
Babydoll is hard to get clean. If people want to wash it
themselves, that's OK, but if it needs additional washing, we charge
extra for that second wash. Customer skirting is a good idea.
Our turnaround right now, is around 8 months
